Introduction

In late 2019, I had the privilege of working as the sole UX/UI Designer on a project commissioned by Studio Tomas Saraceno. The project involved the creation of a mobile app called Aerocene in collaboration with the MIT Department of Earth, Atmospheric, and Planetary Science.Aerocene is a global forecasting system and navigational tool that utilizes open meteorological data to predict flight paths of aerosolar-powered balloons circling the globe without CO2 emissions.

Aerosolar-Powered Balloons

Aerocene is based on the concept of aerosolar-powered balloons, which are propelled by the sun's heat and infrared radiation. These balloons are made of lightweight materials and filled with air that is heated by the sun, causing them to rise into the atmosphere. The Aerocene app uses open meteorological data to predict the flight paths of these balloons, enabling users to plan their journeys and track their progress in real-time.

Global Forecasting System

Aerocene is not just a navigational tool for aerosolar-powered balloons; it is also a global forecasting system that provides real-time weather data and atmospheric conditions from around the world. This data is collected from various sources, including satellites, ground-based sensors, and weather models.By utilizing this data, the Aerocene app can predict the flight paths of aerosolar-powered balloons with a high degree of accuracy, enabling users to plan their journeys and avoid adverse weather conditions.

Collaboration with MIT

The development of Aerocene was a collaborative effort between Studio Tomas Saraceno and the MIT Department of Earth, Atmospheric and Planetary Science. MIT provided the scientific expertise and access to meteorological data, while Studio Tomas Saraceno provided the artistic vision and design direction. The result of this collaboration is a mobile app that combines cutting-edge science with visionary art, creating a powerful tool for exploring the world and understanding our place within it.

Sustainability and Environmentalism

Aerocene is not just a technological marvel; it is also a statement about sustainability and environmentalism. By utilizing renewable energy sources and avoiding CO2 emissions, aerosolar-powered balloons represent a new paradigm for transportation and exploration. The Aerocene app encourages users to explore the world in a sustainable and eco-friendly way, promoting a deeper connection with nature and a greater understanding of our impact on the environment.
